Abstract:

High speed wind tunnels are widely used in the study of fluid flow behavior around various objects. The air flow in the starting step of supersonic wind tunnels is transient including strong shock waves caused by the interaction of the tunnel main stream and the boundary layer at walls. To arrive in running step, the tunnel must be designed so as these waves leave immediately the test section. Otherwise, they will hinder the air flow through the tunnel. Accordingly, as a clear practical fact, the tunnels unable to pass the starting step are considered as unusable. In this paper, a 3-D computational fluid dynamic analysis of the starting stage of a supersonic wind tunnel with a target Mach number of 3 is performed. The results obtained in this work are in agreement with the expected physical behavior of the flow field and can be applied as the design criterion of the high speed wind tunnels.

Numerical Investigation of Flow Field of D87 Dual Fuel Engine

A newly developed heavy duty diesel engine in dual fuel mode of operation has been studied in detail. The main fuel would be natural gas and diesel oil as pilot injection. The importance and effects of mixture preparation and formation through ports, valves and in cylinder flow field with different swirl ratio and tumble on diesel combustion phenomena is an accepted feature which has been studi...

Flow Visualization in Wind Tunnels

Flow visualization is an experimental means of examining the flow patterns around a body or over its surface. The flow is “visualized” by introducing dye, smoke or pigment into the flow in the area under investigation. The primary advantage of such a method is its ability to provide a description of the flow over a model without a complicated data reduction and analysis. Smokeflow visualization...
